伊丽莎白Sharrow is Associate Professor, School of Public Policy & 部门 of History, University of 麻萨诸塞州, and will speak on her co-authored book of the same title.
Dr. Sharrow specializes in the gendered politics of public policy and how policy has shaped intersectional meanings of sex, 比赛, 性, 残疾, 和U班.S. politics over the past fifty years.
The year 1972 is often hailed as an inflection point in the evolution of women’s rights. Congress passed Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that outlawed sex-based discrimination in education. Many celebrate Title IX as transformative policy that ushered in an era of women athletics, yet fifty years after its passage, sex-based inequalities in college athletics remain the reality. This talk will explore the under-appreciated reasons why, identifying institutional perversions – including sex-based segregation, androcentric organizational cultures, and overbearing market incentives – that undermine efforts toward equality. Drawing on large-scale surveys with more than 7,000 student-athletes, athletic administrators, 大学的教练, members of the public, and college sports fans, the talk will highlight how institutions shape attitudes about gender equity initiatives. It will offer novel lessons not only for those interested in college sports but for anyone seeking to understand barriers that any marginalized group faces it its quest for equality.
